Learning to Build Ventures that Matter: My Experience at Columbia University’s Summer Program

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to take part in Columbia University’s summer program, where I enrolled in the course Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Changing the World Via Venture Creation. It was an intensive two-week course designed not only to teach the principles of innovation but also to challenge us to think like real entrepreneurs.

The class met online every weekday evening, and despite the remote format, it was engaging and hands-on. We were introduced to a wide range of topics — from opportunity recognition and startup financing to product-market fit and business model innovation. What made this course especially valuable was the way theory was constantly connected to real-world applications. Using McGourty’s Entrepreneurial Innovation & Finance as our textbook, we worked through practical frameworks that helped us understand how to evaluate risks, identify value propositions, and pitch ideas effectively.

Throughout the course, we worked on developing our own venture concepts, and I focused on an idea that combined wellness with technology — a theme I’ve been passionate about in several of my entrepreneurial experiences. I refined my business pitch, analyzed market size and competition, and learned how to communicate financial needs to hypothetical investors.

What struck me most about the Columbia course was its emphasis on entrepreneurship as a tool for change. It wasn’t about chasing unicorn valuations; it was about creating ventures that solve real problems. The instructors encouraged us to think beyond profit and consider the broader impact of our innovations.

By the end of the program, I didn’t just walk away with a business concept — I left with a stronger sense of purpose. I gained a deeper understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset and a renewed motivation to use what I’ve learned to build meaningful, mission-driven projects.
